A 24-page comic set in the Humankind timeline. Skyler and Charlie, a band, and a robot city called Robopolis.

I wanted to tell a story inside the world I'd already been drawing. Robots, a city, a band that refuses to quit. So I wrote it, drew it, and directed it start to finish… sketch, ink, color, letter. Twenty-four pages.

The first ten went full color. The back half shipped in black and white, which sounds like a budget decision but really I just liked how the ink looked on its own.

Building Skyler

Building Skyler

Before you can draw a character 24 pages deep, you have to know how they turn, sit, mope, and hold a guitar. So Skyler got the full treatment: model sheets, poses, expressions. The kind of homework that looks like nothing and saves you every single panel later.

The city

Robopolis is where all of this lives… the same robot city from the wider universe, drawn as a place you could actually get lost in. A backdrop that had to hold up whether the panel was a wide establishing shot or a tiny window behind someone's head.

Sketch, ink, color, letter

The pipeline was the same every page: rough it, ink it, drop the color, add the letters. Watching a page move through those stages is the most satisfying part of comics… and the part nobody sees. So here are a few of them moving.

Off the page

A comic wants to be a physical thing, so I started making it one. Spreads laid out for print, a mural sketched over a real wall, prints, a t-shirt. The story staying on a screen felt like leaving it half-drawn.

Twenty-four pages, one band, one robot city, and me doing every job on the credits. Mullet proof, as promised.
