The animated series that almost was

The Robotos show that almost was. A little droid who was going to lead an animated kids series with TIME Studios.
In late 2021 TIME Studios picked up Robotos to develop into an animated children's series… one of the first NFT-native IPs headed for TV. The lead was going to be named Robyn. So I spent 2022 and 2023 drawing her into existence.
Character lineups. Action poses. Her family and friends. The places she'd wander through. A whole world getting built one sketch at a time, for a screen it never quite reached.

You don't get a character right on the first try. Robyn started rougher, softer, still figuring out her own face. I drew her over and over until the proportions stopped fighting me and she started feeling like someone.

A lead is nothing without people around her. So Robyn got a family and friends: Brooklyn, Charlie, Rosa, Polo, Shihito. Each one drawn from scratch, each one with their own shape and attitude before they ever got a single line of dialogue.

It has always been my aspiration to bring characters to life and create a universe around them.Me, in the announcement. Still true.
Characters need somewhere to be. Roboto Land grew a geography around them: bamboo forests, pirate ships, a country club for the Cyborgos, Shishito Village. I drew the environments the same way I drew the cast… by hand, one place at a time.

The show never aired. But Robyn is real to me… I drew her a family, a face, a whole world to walk around in. Some things you make just to prove they could exist.
